Organic Certification
Organic Certification…Taking the long view.
Responsible farming is about more than making a profit. It’s about maintaining a connection to the land, and acting as responsible stewards. Coombs Family Farms is proud to be a certified organic maple producer. Organic certification ensures for our consumers that we practice environmental responsibility and that our 100% pure organic maple syrup was produced with respect for the earth, in a manner that is in keeping with our values and yours.
How does the process of being certified organic work? First, inspectors evaluate our forest management practices and make sure that no chemical fertilizers are used on or near our trees. They verify that acceptable buffer zones are in place to prevent accidental drift of contaminants from neighbors or town road crews who may be spraying pesticides or herbicides. Then, the inspectors follow the path of the sap from spout, tube, and tank to the boiling and cleaning process, looking for any possibility of contamination. Everything that comes into contact with the syrup — filters, pumps, drums and so on — is checked. Finally, the inspector reviews our office documentation to see how much we produced, what was purchased, and when and to whom it was sold.
Is it all worth it? Yes. The organic seal ensures that we are doing everything possible to preserve the long-term health of our forests, while providing consumers with the cleanest pure maple product possible. By taking these steps we hope to guarantee that our grandchildren and their children after them can continue in our footsteps.
